The gaming industry welcomes all from every background. One can belong from any field they can even have a specialized degree in art, science, and music and have a career in the gaming industry. The gaming industry has developed a lot and has come a long way with more than 2.34 billion gamers around the globe, establishing itself as a fast-growing sector in the entertainment field. 

NASSCOM has found that the Indian gaming industry has close to $890 million of business each year, and in India, there are over 100 game development organizations already. Due to this, there has been a massive demand for professionals in this field – from programmers to artists to designers and audio engineers. 

What Is Gaming? 

Gaming is running a specialized application called electronic games or video games on gaming consoles or personal computers. Gaming also involves streaming, in which gamers stream the games on a virtual platform and the number of views they get, they make money according to that. 

Gamers are professionals who make money by playing various video games. These are the people who have turned their passion into their careers. To become a successful gamer, it is necessary to commit, pick the right game, play with the right equipment, and lots of practice. 

Becoming a gamer might seem very easy; however, it is just as hard to become successful in this field as in any other field. Gaming is a fast-growing industry, and there is a lot of competition to become a gamer. Picking the right game for you and have the motivation is essential to survive in this field. 

What Is Game Designing? 

Game designing falls under the broader of video game development and refers to the use of design and creativity for developing a game for entertainment and educational purposes. It involves creating compelling story-lines, goals, characters, challenges, and rules driving interactions with other users and characters. 

Game designing is a thrilling, exciting, multi-faceted, and rewarding field. It also has many promising job prospects. However, the journey to becoming a game designer can be challenging. Patience, persistence, and passion are the keys. 

A game designer is responsible for bringing life into a game. These individuals are generally a cross between a programmer, artist, and writer. Game designers also do initial market research to ensure that people are interested and enjoy playing the game concept they are building. 

Rewarding Careers In The Gaming Industry 

Apart from gamers and game designers, there are various career prospects in the gaming industry. It is vital to choose the right career that suits one's capabilities and areas of interest. 

  • Game Animator or Visual Artists 

Game animators or visual artists give physical structure to the environment, objects, characters, and scenarios. They are responsible for giving details to the texture of the skin of each character, define shadows according to the source of light, or the watery gloss on the road when it rains. 

A visual artist also takes good care of defining the manner in which the character moves, walks, jumps, sits, and stands. Within the art department, there are several job roles such as 3D Modellers, Concept Artists, 2D/Texture Artists, and each has a defined set of techniques and responsibilities. 

Education Qualification Required: Bachelor’s in Computer Graphics/ Animation/ Art/ Illustration 

  • Narrative Designer 

Narrative designers work in close contact with game designers adding the context of a story. They work on the entire story-line of the game – what powers the hero and the villain will have? how the villain became evil? why the villain needs to be defeated? and what the player gains when defeating the villain? 

Words in the game are the tools of a narrative designer as they frame dialogues for the characters and the in-game texts. Their creativity comes to play when they have to describe the circumstances of the game through the expression of characters and actions more than what they speak. 

They are responsible for adding the cherry on the top of the game by giving proper definition to the player's story experience, which they will have when playing the game, hence enhancing the game experience. 

Education Qualification Required: Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication or English Literature along with certifications in scriptwriting/ creative writing. 

  • Sound Designer/ Audio Engineer 

All those background noises that you hear or the vehicles' noise have all been developed and created by sound designers and audio engineers. They give a realistic touch to the game by adding soundtracks such as gunshots, helicopter or car vrooms, crowd noises, birds chirping, and many more. 

Every game has its own unique genre and plot. Audio engineers develop the audio of the game in harmony with the game. They capsulate the game's essence with the audio they produce by blending dynamic sound effects with ambient sounds and background music which bring life to the game. 

Education Qualification Required: Bachelor's degree in Sound Engineering or Audiography. 

Game programmers are the people who give fuel to the engine. They create various technical codes which keep the game running. They work in contact with the game artists, game producers, sound technicians and game designers enduring the technical coding of the game is in sync with the game design, and it does justice to the creative vision of the game. 

They also test the programming codes and fix the flaws in the games that the game testers point out. Game development is an extremely complex process, and it is necessary to have large teams of programmers for creating the game. 

Education Qualification Required: A Bachelor's degree in game programming or game development is a good option. Another possible route for a programmer is B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science. 

  • Game Tester 

Playing games all day and getting paid for it is every gamer's dream job. The job role of game testers is no different. They systematically playtest the games, analyze the game performance, identify flaws, and suggest necessary changes to the programmers to enhance the playability and quality of the game before it goes out to the public. 

Game testers play the same level over and over again until they are assured about the absence of any flaws or bugs. The responsibility involves playing games for long hours, making sure the gaming experience is perfect for the players. 

Education Qualification Required: B.Tech or B.E. degree in Computer Science is recommended. One can get the ISTQB Certified Tester certificate from ITB Indian Testing Board, increasing the chances of landing a job.
